Suddenly, essential practices like staff training, lead generation, and member engagement fall by the wayside.

How to Escape the Trap:

1. Rekindle the Basics:

  • Sales & Marketing: Don’t neglect the core of your business. Regular sales training, prospecting for new leads, and a focus on daily appointments and phone calls are essential. Revisit your “master appointment book” and ensure your sales team is actively filling it.

  • Communication is Key: People absorb information differently. Utilize a multi-channel communication strategy. Combine emails, texts, staff meetings, signage, and newsletters to ensure everyone – staff and members – is on the same page. Remember, “telling them once” doesn’t guarantee understanding. Follow up and confirm messages are received.

2. Embrace Accountability:

  • Define & Document: Clearly define roles and responsibilities for every team member. Put it in writing and ensure everyone understands their “what,” “who,” and “when.” Regular accountability fosters a culture of ownership and accomplishment.

  • Leadership, Not Friendship: Earn your team’s respect, not just their friendship. Be a strong leader who holds everyone accountable for completing tasks effectively and on time. Inspect what you expect!

3. The Fun & Functional Zone:

  • Balance is Key: Yes, gyms should be fun! But a healthy dose of structure and accountability is vital too. Strike the right balance – create a motivating environment where fun coexists with achieving goals.

4. Systems & Plans:

  • Don’t Wing It: Your team is your most valuable asset, but successful systems guide them. Develop and implement proven systems for everything – sales, marketing, staffing, conflict resolution – and consistently follow up for maximum impact.
