If you ask me what separates the most successful gym owners, boutique studio operators, entrepreneurs, personal trainers, and salespeople from everyone else, there are plenty of qualities we could talk about.
Mindset matters.
Attitude matters.
Consistency matters.
Work ethic matters.
Discipline matters.
Knowledge matters.
Leadership matters.
But after spending years around gym owners and fitness businesses, I would argue that there is one quality that just might matter more than all the others:
Execution.
Because you can have the best mindset in the world. You can have a great attitude. You can work hard, attend every seminar, read every book, listen to every podcast, and develop an incredible business plan.
But if you don’t execute, none of it matters.
Ideas Don’t Grow Gyms. Execution Does.
One of the things I see all the time in the gym business is owners who know what they should be doing.
They know they need to follow up with leads faster.
They know they need to ask for referrals.
They know they need to train their salespeople.
They know they need to contact former members.
They know they need to improve retention.
They know they should raise prices.
They know they should create additional revenue streams.
They know they need to recruit better employees.
The problem isn’t always knowledge.
The problem is execution.
Knowing what needs to happen and actually making sure it happens every single day are two completely different things.
Execution Is Where Strategy Becomes Revenue
Imagine two gym owners.
Both attend the same conference.
Both hear the same speaker explain a proven member referral strategy.
The first owner takes pages of notes, talks about how great the idea is and says:
“We definitely need to start doing this.”
Then Monday comes.
The gym gets busy.
Employees call in.
A piece of equipment breaks.
There are bills to pay.
The referral program never gets implemented.
The second owner hears the same idea.
Before leaving the conference, they decide:
- Who will be responsible for it.
- When it will start.
- How the staff will present it.
- How results will be tracked.
- When it will be reviewed.
One month later, that gym may have 20, 30 or 50 additional referrals working through the sales process.
Same idea.
Different result.
The difference was execution.
Stop Confusing Activity With Execution
This is something else I see frequently.
Being busy isn’t necessarily execution.
A gym owner can spend 12 hours at the club and still accomplish very little that actually moves the business forward.
Answering emails.
Fixing small problems.
Talking with members.
Moving equipment.
Checking social media.
Sitting in meetings.
All of those things may need to happen.
But execution means identifying the activities that produce results and making sure those activities happen consistently.
For a gym, those activities might include:
Following up with every new lead within five minutes.
Booking prospects within 48 hours.
Making outbound prospecting calls.
Asking members for referrals.
Contacting former members.
Following up with no-shows.
Calling members who haven’t visited recently.
Training the sales team.
Reviewing closing percentages.
Tracking cancellations.
These aren’t complicated ideas.
But when they are executed every day, they can dramatically change the business.
The Best Plan Is Worthless Without Execution
Gym owners sometimes spend too much time searching for the perfect strategy.
The perfect marketing campaign.
The perfect CRM.
The perfect membership price.
The perfect sales script.
The perfect lead-generation strategy.
The perfect software.
The perfect business plan.
And certainly, we want good strategies.
But a good strategy executed aggressively and consistently will usually outperform a brilliant strategy that never gets implemented.
Sometimes the answer isn’t another idea.
Sometimes the answer is simply:
Execute the plan you already have.
Execution Requires Accountability
Execution also requires accountability.
It’s not enough to tell your staff:
“We need to follow up with leads better.”
What does “better” mean?
Instead, establish measurable expectations.
Every lead contacted within five minutes.
Every inquiry receives multiple follow-up attempts.
Every prospect is asked to schedule an appointment.
Every appointment is confirmed.
Every no-show is contacted.
Every salesperson tracks their closing percentage.
Every member is periodically asked for a referral.
Now we have something that can be managed.
As I frequently tell gym owners, you can’t manage what you don’t measure.
Execution becomes significantly easier when expectations are specific and results are visible.
Execution Creates Momentum
Another powerful thing happens when a business becomes execution-focused.
Momentum begins to build.
One additional membership sale doesn’t dramatically change your gym.
But one additional sale every day does.
One referral doesn’t change your business.
But five referral conversations every day might.
One former-member call doesn’t matter much.
But 30 calls every week could generate meaningful revenue.
Execution compounds.
Small activities performed consistently eventually create very large outcomes.
That’s one reason successful gym operators often appear to have momentum that struggling gyms don’t.
The successful operator isn’t necessarily doing something revolutionary.
They may simply be executing the fundamentals at a higher level.
Your Staff Must Become Execution-Oriented
This same principle applies when hiring employees.
We talk about looking for attitude.
Absolutely.
We talk about work ethic.
Of course.
We talk about enthusiasm, personality, coachability and communication skills.
All important.
But I also want people who execute.
If you tell someone to call 30 prospects, do they make the calls?
If you ask them to follow up with every lead, does it happen?
If you give them a sales process, do they follow it?
If you give them a deadline, do they meet it?
Some people are great talkers.
Some people have great ideas.
Some people are incredibly enthusiastic.
But ultimately, businesses need people who get things done.
Ask Yourself One Question
At the end of each week, ask yourself:
What did we actually execute this week that will improve the business?
Not what did we talk about.
Not what did we plan.
Not what did we discuss in the staff meeting.
Not what did we intend to do.
What did we actually execute?
Did we launch the promotion?
Did we contact the leads?
Did we make the sales calls?
Did we train the staff?
Did we ask for referrals?
Did we follow up with former members?
Did we improve the sales process?
Did we address retention?
Did we implement the idea?
That question can tell you a lot about where your business is headed.
Execution May Be the Ultimate Competitive Advantage
Here’s the good news.
Execution isn’t complicated.
And that’s exactly why it can become such a powerful competitive advantage.
Most of your competitors already know many of the same things you know.
They can read the same books.
Watch the same videos.
Use the same software.
Run similar ads.
Attend the same conferences.
Hire similar consultants.
But knowing something and executing it are very different things.
The gym that consistently follows up with every lead will usually outperform the gym that occasionally does.
The gym that consistently asks for referrals will outperform the gym that merely talks about referrals.
The gym that consistently trains its employees will outperform the gym that trains when there’s time.
The gym that consistently measures its numbers will make better decisions than the gym operating on assumptions.
Execution creates separation.
Final Thought
Mindset matters.
Attitude matters.
Consistency matters.
Work ethic matters.
Knowledge matters.
Strategy matters.
But eventually, every one of those things has to turn into action.
You don’t get paid for the ideas sitting in your notebook.
You don’t get paid for the strategies discussed during staff meetings.
You don’t get paid because you know what should happen.
You get results from what actually gets done.
So if you’re looking for the single quality that could make the biggest difference in your gym business, don’t overlook execution.
The winners aren’t always the people with the best ideas. Very often, they’re simply the people who execute.
