A lot of gym owners believe they have a marketing problem when what they really have is a sales process problem.
We see this frequently.
A number of years ago, I had a client ask me to fly out and evaluate their gym. Their big concern—the problem they believed they needed to solve—was marketing.
Marketing just wasn’t working.
They weren’t getting enough people into the gym.
So I flew out, conducted an on-site evaluation, and spent some time training the staff.
And what we discovered was interesting.
Maybe they were getting enough prospects.
They just weren’t handling those prospects properly.
Once we changed the club’s approach, the results changed dramatically.
The gym went from approximately 30 sales per month to 120 sales per month.
And here’s the most important part:
We did not add any new marketing.
We didn’t increase the advertising budget.
We didn’t introduce some revolutionary lead-generation strategy.
We changed how the club handled the opportunities it was already receiving.
If you want to improve gym sales immediately, there are five basic changes I would start making today.
1. Regardless of the Circumstances, Everyone Gets a Presentation
This is probably the toughest one for many gym operators.
It’s also one of the biggest difference-makers.
Everyone gets a presentation.
Not just the person who looks ready to buy.
Not just the person who asks about membership.
Not just the prospect who scheduled an appointment.
Everyone.
Someone walks in asking for prices?
Give them a presentation.
Someone says they’re “just looking”?
Give them a presentation.
Someone says they’re only checking things out because their friend recommended the gym?
Give them a presentation.
You don’t have to be pushy.
You don’t have to trap anybody in an office.
But you do need to have a conversation and walk them through what you do.
The moment your staff starts deciding who deserves a presentation and who doesn’t, they’re pre-judging prospects.
And when you pre-judge prospects, you eliminate sales before the sales process ever begins.
If you’re talking to everyone, at least you’ve given yourself a chance.
2. Treat Everyone Like a Buyer
Your attitude toward a prospect often determines how well you handle that prospect.
If someone walks through the door and your staff immediately thinks:
“They probably can’t afford it.”
“They’re just shopping around.”
“They don’t look serious.”
“They’re probably not joining today.”
You’ve already created a problem.
Treat everyone like a buyer.
That doesn’t mean assuming they’re going to purchase regardless of what happens.
It means giving every prospect the same professional attention, enthusiasm, presentation, and opportunity to make a decision.
One of the biggest mistakes I see in gym sales is staff members mentally disqualifying people before they’ve even had a real conversation with them.
You simply don’t know.
Some of the people who look the least interested initially may become your best members.
And some of the people who walk in saying, “I’m definitely joining today,” may walk right back out.
Follow the process.
Treat everyone like a buyer.
3. Sit Down With the Prospect
This sounds extremely simple, but it’s frequently overlooked.
Always sit down with your prospect.
And I don’t mean leaning against the front counter while somebody is trying to ask you membership questions.
Have a table and chairs.
Have a small sales area.
Have an office.
It doesn’t need to be elaborate. In fact, it can be very simple.
But sit down.
You’re getting ready to do business.
When somebody sits down with you, the conversation becomes more focused. You have the opportunity to ask questions, learn what they’re trying to accomplish, explain your program, establish value, and eventually ask them to make a decision.
Remember something else:
The customer doesn’t know what the desired outcome of your sales process is supposed to look like. You do.
You’re the professional.
You should be guiding the process.
If your ideal sales process involves sitting down, learning about their goals, presenting your program, discussing pricing, and asking for the sale, then lead them through that process.
Don’t leave it to chance.
4. Use a Pre-Printed Price Sheet
Another small change that can have an immediate impact is using a professional, pre-printed price sheet.
Don’t grab a piece of paper and start writing numbers down.
There’s an element of trust involved here.
A professional price sheet communicates that these are your established programs and established prices.
It also gives you the ability to structure your offer properly.
For example, you can use anchor pricing.
You may show your highest-value or highest-priced option first, establishing an initial point of comparison.
Then you can present additional options that allow the prospect to compare value.
You can also use a choice close.
Instead of turning the conversation into:
“Do you want to join?”
You can move the discussion toward:
“Which of these options works best for you?”
There’s an important distinction.
One question focuses on whether they’ll buy.
The other helps them determine how they’d like to buy.
A well-designed price sheet helps your sales staff maintain consistency while also making the purchasing decision easier for the prospect to understand.
5. Ask Everyone to Buy
This may be the simplest step.
It may also be the one that gets missed the most.
Ask people to buy.
And understand that questions such as:
“What do you think?”
“Do you have any questions?”
“How does everything sound?”
Those are not closing questions.
You’re having a conversation.
You’re not actually asking for the business.
At some point, you need what I call decent boldness.
The decent part means you’re friendly, courteous, professional, and respectful.
The bold part means you’re willing to ask someone to make a decision.
Because if you don’t ask, the answer is always no.
You can give the greatest tour imaginable.
You can have the cleanest facility in your market.
You can have incredible trainers.
You can build tremendous value.
But somebody eventually has to ask:
“Which membership would you like to get started with?”
“Would you like to get started today?”
“Let’s go ahead and get you set up.”
Salespeople sometimes avoid this because they don’t want to feel pushy.
There’s a huge difference between being pushy and confidently asking a prospect to buy something you genuinely believe will help them.
That’s decent boldness.
Do You Really Need More Leads?
Before spending another dollar on marketing, take a hard look at what happens to the opportunities you’re already receiving.
Ask yourself:
- Is every prospect receiving a complete presentation?
- Are we treating every person like a legitimate buyer?
- Are we sitting down and actually presenting our program?
- Are we using a professional price presentation?
- Are we asking every prospect to buy?
If you’re generating leads but inconsistently doing those five things, getting more leads may simply give you more opportunities to make the same mistakes.
Sometimes the fastest path to higher sales isn’t increasing traffic.
It’s improving what happens once the traffic arrives.
How Can a Gym Improve Sales Immediately?
The fastest way to improve gym sales is to create a consistent sales process for every prospect. Give everyone a presentation, treat everyone like a potential buyer, sit down and discuss their goals, use a professional price sheet, and directly ask for the sale.
Marketing creates opportunity.
Your sales process determines what you do with it.
Can Better Sales Training Increase Gym Memberships Without More Marketing?
Absolutely.
I’ve seen it firsthand.
The gym I mentioned earlier went from approximately 30 sales per month to 120 sales per month without adding or changing its marketing.
The opportunity was already there.
The biggest difference was how the team handled that opportunity.
And that’s something every gym owner should pay attention to.
Before you assume you need another marketing campaign, another lead source, another promotion, or another advertising platform, look at your process.
You may already have enough opportunities.
You may simply need to handle them differently.
Everyone gets a presentation.
Treat everyone like a buyer.
Sit down.
Use a professional price presentation.
And ask for the sale with decent boldness.
Start there.
You may be surprised by how quickly your numbers change.
